Atelier Bowy C.D.
Atelier Bowy C.D. is a curatorial platform within Henzel Studio dedicated to experimental, contemplative, and process-driven approaches to contemporary rug design. Operating at the intersection of tradition and innovation, the atelier creates handmade works that are conceived not simply as decorative elements, but as site-responsive objects—material expressions of craftsmanship, context, and enduring cultural dialogue. Each piece reflects a refined, modern language grounded in artisanal knowledge while remaining open to new formal and material investigations.
The atelier originated as an experimental extension of Henzel Studio during one of founder Calle Henzel’s extended creative residencies in New York’s Bowery district. Now based in Greater Copenhagen, Atelier Bowy C.D. continues to function with the sensibility of a research-led studio, where parallel practices converge through exploration, reduction, and careful attention to process. While Henzel Studio is internationally recognized for its collaborations with leading contemporary artists, ABCD follows a distinct yet complementary trajectory—inviting architects and designers to engage the handmade rug as a medium for their own spatial and aesthetic language.
Under the artistic direction of Calle Henzel, whose multidisciplinary career spans painting, collage, and design, the atelier serves both as a laboratory for ongoing formal experimentation and as a framework for quieter, distilled compositions developed by its in-house team. This dual structure produces a body of work that moves fluidly between innovation and restraint, always guided by material sensitivity, technical mastery, and contextual awareness.
Calle Henzel has spent nearly three decades redefining the possibilities of textile design, bringing an artist’s methodology to the field of luxury rugs. Known for challenging conventional notions of subject matter, form, and finish, his practice consistently blurs the boundaries between art, craft, and design. Through collaborations with artists such as Richard Prince, Nan Goldin, and Juergen Teller, Henzel Studio has presented works in internationally recognized institutions including MOCA, the Katonah Museum of Art, and The Goss-Michael Foundation—establishing a legacy of innovation that informs the ongoing work of Atelier Bowy C.D.
Designed for both residential and contract environments, the atelier’s rugs embody a balance of experimentation and permanence, offering contemporary design rooted in cultural continuity and the enduring value of the handmade.
