BIOGRAPHY
Margarita (Ita) Aleksievska Sclavi, aka "House of Ita" Macedonian origin.
is a Rome-based multimedia textile artist of North
Following an interlude in the United States and England, Ita moved permanently to Rome, where she handcrafts
mixed media Tapestries and Artistic Home Textiles in limited editions alongside collectible items.
What distinguishes her work is the measured contamination of traditional and contemporary elements, in a
game of union and contrasts. Studying iconographies and symbolic archetypes of balcan origin with byzantyne
and medieval memories in her unique sign of great personality.
Ita's creations, which honour her multicultural background, are amalgam of ingredients from customs and
countries with strong influence of cross cultural design, where East meets West.
Tapestries are the heart of her work because as she sayes : “ The absolutely unlimited interplay of pattern, color
and texture – there is no other medium where this Trinity is so fully realized.
“
By subverting the original traditional imagery Ita rewrites the fabric’s narrative with mixed mediums like thread,
mettalic foil, paint and collaging fabrics, jewels etc..
Tapestries that breath life within a delicately mysterious iconography, infused with a sense of unreality and
surprise, which winks at Surrealism and reveals influences ranging from Naïve Art to Magical Realism, from
Russian Constructivism to Ornamentalism, Ballet Russes, Fashion and Mythology.
An eclectic style, to which the dualistic nature of her career contributes: in addition to her artistic vocation, Ita is
also a practicing psychiatrist and psychotherapist, convinced that both activities are a powerful means of
fostering the narration of Individual and Collective experiences.
Her production intersects multiple levels and displays a complex and highly expressive language.
Each tapestry is a visual poem, a narration and reflection of the artist's imaginary world.
Observing the works is like stepping into Wonderland and embarking on an extraordinary journey of fantasy.
In 2016 she completed a course for Hand painting and Printing Textiles and Wallpaper at Central Saint Martins
College of Art and Design in London, UK as well as Interior Decoration course with Abygail Ahern, London,UK.
